Height is another thing to consider when choosing a bar stool. Stools come in various heights and oftentimes people purchase a stool or even a large number of stools only to realize that the stools are either too tall or too short for the bar or bar table for which they are intended. Unless you are planning on purchasing an adjustable stool, you should measure the height of your bar or bar table. Your stool should sit under it leaving 10 to 13 inches for leg room and easy movement.
24 and 26 inch bar stool heights are rather new and are designed to be used for counter heights of 36-39 inches. This seat height was designed specifically for kitchen counters, usually where there is no extra room for the conventional table and chairs. They can also be used at kitchen islands, given the island is the same height as a regular-sized kitchen table and not taller.
Most newer homes and apartments with a raised counter are built to accommodate 3 bar stools. As a general rule of thumb, allow 24\" from the center of one seat to the center of the next seat. A 6 foot long counter can generally accommodate 3 stools. An 8 foot counter, 4 bar stools. This obviously depends on the measurements of the particular stool in which you are interested. You can always buy an extra and use it for additional guests.
